Taylor 655ce

This beautiful Taylor 655ce 12 string acoustic came into the shop needing some simple warranty work. The power-supply was malfunctioning and causing the battery to die extremely fast. Taylor immediately sent out the replacement part and we had the new part installed in no time. I really appreciate how easy to work with the folks at Taylor; great folks and wonderful guitars.

Being an often played guitar, the frets were worn down to the point where the strings were in danger of buzzing (aka “fretting out”). Also, when frets are worn down this much, it will cause intonation problems. One symptom of a guitar having intonation problems is that the guitar begins to sound out of tune as you play further up the neck.

So we did a quick fret dress and set-up and the guitar was ready for the stage again.

Gibson MK-35

This 1976 Gibson MK-35 has a bridge that was pulling up and just beginning to warp the soundboard a little.

The pickgaurd was all but unglued, too, but that is hardly a big deal with this particular model. A little 3M spray glue will have it back on in no time.

UPDATE:
The bridge was successfully removed, all of the old glue was cleaned off and some minor splintering son the soundboard (under the bridge) was repaired. The bridge is now glued and clamped into place. Once the glue dries, we’ll set it up.

Guitars & Water Don’t Mix

The flood that hit Nashville on May 1, 2010 has been devastating to many families and businesses. More than 30 people have lost their lives. Many more have lost their homes and jobs. It is disheartening for me that the national media has not reported on this tragedy as they have many of the other disasters that our nation has suffered.

You might consider donating to one of these fine local charities that will directly impact the Middle Tennessee region:

Many of my friends, former co-workers and employers have been hit hard by the flood. Here are some links to pictures from just a few…

The 1st Shop: 1994

Colin’s Guitar Works officially began in the dining room of my apartment in 1991. A couple of years later, in 1994, it moved into a Nashville music store. These are a few photos of the shop in that store.

Strat Modification

Our client wanted to install two humbuckers in his Japanese Strat. We needed to route out the pick-up cavity for the pick-ups to fit. We then installed all new electronics and gave the guitar a set-up.

The Hiatus is Over

After moving to Virginia several years ago, I took some time away from building and repairing guitars. I would occasionally help out friends with their guitars or take on projects from my clients back in Nashville- but it was not quite the same.

But the hiatus is over. The guitar bench has been cleared off and it already has a handful of guitars waiting for some TLC.

On this section of the website, we’ll be posting photos and stories of various projects as they come though the shop. So check back soon!
